Meet Mary
Mary Love is a classically trained pianist with over a decade of experience teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages. She holds a bachelor of music degree in piano performance and a master’s degree in piano pedagogy from The Catholic University of America and has performed in concert venues across the DMV and San Francisco. By providing a nurturing, encouraging, and rigorous musical environment, Mary hopes to instill in her students a deep love of music and provide them with the skills necessary to enjoy a lifetime of piano playing. Her experiences with carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and lupus-induced arthritis have spurred her to study a holistic approach to healing and injury prevention and apply it in her teaching. She is a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) and currently lives in Harpers Ferry with her husband and two children.

Studio Policies
Missed lessons
Please give as much advanced notice of a missed lesson as possible. I will offer two makeup lessons for students over the course of the year. In cases where a lesson is canceled due to the teacher’s schedule or inclement weather, a makeup lesson will be offered. Virtual lessons may also be offered at the discretion of the teacher.

Student responsibilities
Students are expected to complete their weekly theory work and come to each lesson prepared. Daily practice is essential to making progress over the course of piano study! Recommendations for practice time are as follows:

Practice time
Age 4-6: 20-30 minutes, divided into two practice sessions
Age 6-8: 30-40 minutes, divided into two practice sessions
Age 9-12: 45-60 minutes
Age 13+: 60+ minutes

Parent responsibilities
Parental involvement is crucial to your child’s progress! This comes in the form of monitoring younger children’s practicing, ensuring your piano is tuned at least once a year, and providing your child with encouragement when he or she faces musical challenges! Multiple studies have shown that piano study results in higher levels of emotional and cognitive skills in children. More importantly, the perseverance and self-discipline your child will develop as a result of dedicating time to piano study will result not only in the satisfaction of being able to play the piano at a high level, but will also translate to success in many other areas of life.
